What does Methionine do?

Methionine is an essential sulphur-containing amino acid which is converted in the Body to cysteine, carnitine, glutathione, taurine and nucleic acids. It is important for the growth and repair of tissues (especially in cases of injury & trauma) and can be used in detoxification but B Vitamins should be given in conjunction. Methionine is also a rich source of Antioxidants, which are necessary for the mineral Selenium to be absorbed and efficiently utilised.

More about Methionine:

As methionine is an essential amino acid, it should not be entirely removed from animal diets without death or disease occurring over time. A study of rats that were fed a diet without methionine went on to develop anemia, steatohepatitis (fatty liver) and lost two thirds of their body weight over a period of 5 weeks.

Methionine is also used by plants for synthesis of ethylene. The process is known as the methionine cycle or yang cycle.

Methionine food sources:

As an essential amino acid, methionine is not synthesized from scratch in the body and must be consumed. High levels of methionine can be found in eggs, meats, Sesame Seeds, Brazil Nuts, Fish and some other plant seeds. It is also found in cereal grains. Racemic methionine is sometimes added as an ingredient to pet foods. Most fruits and vegetables also contain small traces of methionine.
