Is Milk Thistle good for type 2 diabetes?
A recent meta-analysis performed at the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Iran, suggested that a simple herbal supplement may offer extra support to Type 2 diabetics. A total of seven trials with a total of 370 participants were carried out to establish the potential effects of silymarin supplementation on the metabolic status of T2D patients for a period of 45 days to 1 year.
After pooling the evidence, it was found that silymarin supplementation may have significantly reduced fasting blood sugar levels and insulin compared to placebo, as well as improved the metabolic status, due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperglycaemic and anti-oxidative compounds. Although further research is necessary to establish consistent analytical methods and the optimal dose, this study concluded that silymarin may improve health markers and metabolic status in diabetic patients.
