What is Hawthorn berry?
The Hawthorn berry is a tiny fruit that grows on the trees and shrubs of Crataegus genus (also known as the May Tree), which grows in Asia, Europe, and North America. These berries have a tarty, tangy taste and range in colour from deep red black to a mid-yellow, and while edible, they are not considered tasty enough to be tempting.
What is Hawthorn berry used for?
Hawthorn berries have been used in traditional Chinese medicine as far back as the 15th century, where they were thought to benefit high blood pressure, digestive issues and heart failure. Today, Hawthorn Berry is still touted for these aformentioned heath benefits, despite conflicting medical research, but is also thought to lower Cholesterol and triglyceride levels, as well as encourage healthy Hair growth. It's important to note however that more research is needed before medically backed recommendations can be made.
