Bromelain is an enzyme derived from the stem of fresh pineapples. It has traditionally been used as a Digestion & Gut Health aid, especially to assist in the Digestion of fatty or high-protein meals, but more recently research has shown it can be absorbed and have other useful purposes within the Body, which include assisting the body's production of prostaglandins associated with inflammation and pain.

What is Bromelain?

Bromelain is an extract derived from the stems of pineapples and has a history of folk and modern medicinal use. As a supplement it is believed to have anti-inflammatory effects and contains chemicals that, according to lab research, might interfere with the growth of slow blood clotting and tumor cells. Bromelain extract is a mixture of protein-digesting enzymes (proteolytic or protease enzymes). The two main enzymes are in this extract are stem bromelain and fruit bromelain.

Bromelain in tropical parts of the world where pineapples are grown, such as Taiwan or Thailand. It is prepared from the stem of the pineapple plant after harvesting the fruit for other commercial purposes. The stem is peeled and pressed to obtain the juice where the soluble bromelain enzyme is found. The process concludes with purification and concentration of the enzyme.

What does Bromelain do for your body?

Supplementation of bromelain may reduce nasal inflammation, meaning it may work well as a decongestant. And when applied topically, Bromelain is believed to be highly effective at safely removing damaged tissue from wounds and from 2nd degree burns. In most cases however, Bromelain is usually used as a supplement for reducing inflammation and improving digestion.
