How To Make A Turmeric Latte – Golden Milk

turmeric latte recipe

This warm and nourishing drink was a classic from India, however it seemed to reach café’s and kitchens here in the UK around 2016, reaching the mainstream and being adopted by a number of celebrity chefs. It is unsurprising however, when you consider how healthy and tasty it is. We previously wrote an article on the health benefits of turmeric latte which is worth reading. If you’re looking for any of the ingredients then you might want to take a look at our turmeric supplements.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of almond milk – this is the most commonly used milk, however you can switch this for a different milk if you prefer. We’ve even tried this with pea milk, while many people use coconut milk.
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder – you can put in a bit more for a greater health boost, but you don’t want the taste too intense
  • Half tsp ground cinnamon – or adjust lower if you feel too intense
  • 1 tsp ground ginger - or adjust lower if you feel too intense
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract – optional, but certainly adds a great flavour
  • 1 pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tsp of honey – this adds a sweeter flavour, but optional if you’re keeping your sugar levels down. Can also swap for alternatives such as maple or agave syrup

Directions:

  1. Add all the ingredients to a pan and softly blend them together for 15 seconds
  2. Heat on the hob at a medium heat till its hot, but make sure NOT to boil completely
  3. Remove from the heat and pour into mugs
  4. If you wish for a latte appearance and consistency, you can use an electric milk frother to gain similar results

Key Points:

  • The quantity highlighted above in the ingredients serves 2 people, therefore you can adjust the quantity to suit your needs.
  • The preparation and cooking time is around five minutes, making this a quick and easy recipe for a great tasting drink.
  • If looking it up online, you may also find it under the name Golden Milk or turmeric tea. Due to the warming taste without any caffeine, it is also nicknamed a bedtime golden milk.
  • We used the unsweetened almond milk, but we completely leave this open to you. But due to the flavours being added, be aware it might taste quite different between sweetened and unsweetened.
  • It is hard to put a definitive calorie count or nutritional breakdown, as we’re not being overly precise with measurements and ingredients so you can mix and match to suit your taste, however it is around 181 calories, predominantly coming from the milk and honey. You should tick off a fair portion of your calcium intake for the day, as well as Vitamin A and Iron.
  • While the drink is very much different, it is commonly compared to chai latte. This is enhanced even further if you add a little nutmeg to your turmeric coffee.
