What's the difference between probiotics & prebiotics?
Probiotics are good bacteria that can help improve the health of your gut, by restoring your natural balance. Some probiotics also have beneficial health effects, reducing digestive issues or increasing your resistance to infection, for example. Prebiotics are natural fibres that improve the balance of good gut bacteria and effect of probiotics by providing substrate for their growth.
How many types of gut bacteria are there?
There are some 400 species of bacteria in the gut including bacteroides, lactobacillus, clostridium, fusobacterium, bifidobacterium, eubacterium, and peptostreptococcus. Good gut bacteria species which are frequently found in food Supplements include lactobacillus and bifidobacterium species. Modern lifestyle factors including Stress, alcohol, antibiotics, lack of exercise and junk food can cause an imbalance in your bacteria, decreasing the good ones such as the aforementioned Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria. So, as you can see, it is critical to the maintenance of human health that a balance is preserved between these species.
How does Kiwi fruit aid digestion?
The inhabitants of New Zealand have highly prized the digestive power of Kiwi fruit for decades, where it is believed that by consuming just two fresh Kiwi fruits a day will offer natural digestive support. Medical research seems to further support this theory too, with many studies of Kiwi's active ingredient, Actinidin, showing it is enriched with soluble fibre and natural prebiotics that increase the natural levels of good gut bacteria and improve protein digestion.
