On Orders Over £45Rice Syrup, or rice malt, is an extremely popular sweetener alternative from the Northern and Eastern hemispheres. You will find rice syrup on the shelves of many Chinese Grocery stores, as well as within many processed foods.
It is made to a traditional fermentation process that breaks down the starch content in the brown rice grains. Essentially it is glucose, which is thought to be less harmful than fructose for metabolic health, however it does have a high glycemic index (GI) score of 98 (table sugar is only 65).
Compared to many of the other types of syrups we stock, rice syrup has very few nutrients, with just small traces of Calcium, sodium and Potassium, but it is a fine source of fibre.
It is a good option for vegans who want to avoid eating honey and those looking to reduce their fructose intake. It does however have a higher glycaemic index than Honey.
