Agave Syrup
Agave Nectar: the alternative sweetener with a low glycemic index
Agave Syrup (pronounced ah-GAH-vay) is a delicious, natural alternative to sugar-based Sweeteners that comes from the same plant that produces tequila (Agave Tequilana). This blue agave plant grows primarily in Mexico, South America and remote southern areas of the U.S.A, and it's fluid is used to make this very low glucose Syrup.
Agave Syrup is commonly sold as 'Agave Nectar' and contains high traces of fructans (naturally occurring fructose polymers that are malabsorbed in the small intestine) that are thought to have beneficial effects on insulin (a hormone produced in the pancreas) and healthy metabolism. And because almost all of the sugar content found in Agave Syrup is fructose, it has a very Low GI too, making it ideal for those on strict diets or with diabetes.
