The Wonderful Benefits of Bee Pollen
Bee Pollen comes from pollen collected on the legs and bodies of bees and may contain nectar and bee saliva. Bee Pollen is considered to be one of nature’s most nourishing foodstuffs being about 40% protein mainly as essential amino acids and high in vitamin B and fibre. Although it takes a while for bees to accumulate the pollen, bee keepers are easily able to remove it from the hive without causing any harm to the bees or upsetting their routine. Interestingly it is not possible to synthesise bee pollen in the laboratory as there appear to be certain elements that cannot be reproduced. Herbalists have said for years that bee pollen is exceptionally nutritious and may ease symptoms of certain ailments. Health benefits are thought to include:
- Boosting immune system.
- Maintenance of healthy hair, skin and nails.
- Helps to strengthen blood capillaries and vessels and therefore supporting cardiovascular system.
- Stimulation of ovarian function.
- Reduction in fatigue and increased physical strength and stamina.
- Effective against some bacteria.
- Helps regulate bowel function.
Victoria Beckham once tweeted about her obsession for bee pollen. It is usually taken in granular form and can be eaten off the spoon, sprinkled on food or mixed into smoothies. Research suggests it is worth taking 1 teaspoon daily just to get the nutrients. It should be noted that it is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women and very occasionally people experience a mild allergic reaction.
