Digestion is the breakdown of food into smaller components that can be more easily absorbed and assimilated by the body. In the Human Body the food enters the mouth and mechanical digestion of the food starts by chewing the food and wetting with saliva which contains a digestive enzyme. It then travels down the oesophagus into the stomach where gastric juices continue the digestive process. It leaves the stomach via the duodenum where it is further mixed with digestive juices from the pancreas and then passes into the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream. The final stages occur in the large intestine where faeces are formed, stored in the rectum and pass through the anus to the outside.
