I expect you are thinking that the staff at Natures Healthbox have taken leave of their senses or seriously over indulged during the Festive Period !

Well you would be wrong – having been slightly put off by the price in the past we are all now resolved to “give it a go” for a few weeks and suggest you do too and we can all compare notes after the trial period.

We are talking about Matcha Green Tea Powder which is a potent variety of Green Tea. The Green Tea plants for Matcha are grown in the shade for about 3 weeks before harvest which slows the growth and stimulates the production of chlorophyll turning leaves a darker shade of green and causing production of more amino acids – in particular theanine. During processing the stems and veins are removed and the product is finely ground to a powder  - we are told it can take up to an hour to grind 30g to the required consistency ! Generally it is considered to be quite expensive but one shot contains the potency of at least 10 cups of standard green tea. When you drink Matcha you are ingesting the entire leaf and receive 100% of its nutrients including a mega dose of antioxidants which are one of the the body’s defences against ageing and chronic diseases. The more you get the better your body is equipped to fight infection and disease. Matcha also contains a potent class of antioxidant called catechins which aren’t found in other foods and in particular EGCG (epigallacatechin gallate) and these are thought to have the ability to have many health benefits including cancer fighting properties.

Matcha was first introduced in Japan over a thousand years ago as an aid to meditation for the Buddhist monks. After many hours of sitting the monks drank it to remain alert but calm. In a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony everything centres around the preparation, serving and drinking of the Ceremonial Grade Matcha Tea. Between half and 1 teaspoon of powder is mixed with about 50ml of hot (not boiling) water at about 70-80 degrees in the traditional tea bowl and whisked to a froth using zig zag movements with a bamboo whisk. The higher grades of matcha have a more intense sweetness and deeper flavour than the standard culinary grade which are ideal for cooking, baking and flavouring drinks or ice cream.

After only one shot drinkers seem to experience a boost of energy throughout the day and as an additional benefit the Theanine may aid memory and learning ability. People often describe the effect produced as a feeling of “calm alertness” which is in contrast to the “hit” often experienced after drinking coffee which may result in a nervous, jittery state of mind in some people.

Many people find that matcha is a great addition to a weight loss program as it is thought to boost metabolism significantly without raising the blood pressure or heart rate.  Matcha also helps to safely cleanse and purge the body of harmful elements as Chlorophyll is a powerful detoxifier.

We are, therefore led to  believe that Matcha Tea is an easy an simple way to add powerful health benefits to your everyday diet.
