Pea protein has many uses as it is free from wheat, gluten, dairy products, eggs, Soya and animal products. It is unsweetened and has a mild savoury taste making it useful for mixing in to soups and stews.

Do peas have protein?

Peas contain many well-known sources of vegetable protein and are a member of the legume family. In recent years, pea protein has become a major ingredient in protein powder Supplements. The unique characteristic of pea protein is that it limits the growth of bacteria such as E. coli, which can cause stomach problems. It may also help to lower Blood Pressure by disabling certain enzymes.

In comparison to a standard consumption of boiled pea's, pea protein powders have the advantages of even higher levels of protein and because of the way they are processed, do not produce flatulence. A down side to pea protein supplements, comes from an excessive consumption that leads to a build up of uric acid in the system. This can cause symptoms such as gout (a joint inflammation disease) and to the leeching of calcium from the bones, which can have severe long term consequences.

How might pea protein benefit vegans & vegetarians?

Vegetarians and vegans often struggle to provide their bodies with enough protein to sustain a busy modern lifestyle. A diet rich in legumes helps, however some legumes can be difficult to digest and may have possible negative side effects. Whey, egg, soy and animal-based protein supplements have all been shown to produce allergic reactions in some people. Of all the protein supplements available, pea protein produces the least amount of allergic reactions.
