What does Folic Acid do?

Folic acid plays an essential role in cell multiplication and is critical in DNA and RNA formation, making it especially important in foetal development. The DoH now recommends that all women planning a Pregnancy (including those during the first 3 months of pregnancy) take a daily supplement of 400µg of folic acid. 

Folic acid is also known for its role in reducing homocysteine, a harmful chemical present in blood that is linked to heart disease. Official data indicates that 9 out of 10 adults do not consume enough folic acid, with 47% of women below the RNI intake of 200µg per day.
