What is Folic Acid?

Folic Acid is a B vitamin and a form of folate that everyone needs, however it is particularly important for pregnant women or those women who are are planning on becoming pregnant. Manufactured folic acid, such as Higher Nature Folic Acid, is converted into folate by the Body and used as a dietary supplement to protect unborn babies against serious birth defects.

What foods contain Folic Acid?

Folic Acid can be obtained from fortified foods, such as Bread, cereal and pasta.

Why is Folic Acid important for pregnant women?

Takiing Folic acid during pregnancy is very important for a woman, as it can significantly reduce the chance of neural tube defects (NTDs), such as spina bifida. Women who could get pregnant are advised to supplement with 400 micrograms of folic acid before they're pregnant and during the first  twelve weeks of pregnancy, when the baby's spine is developing. Some women may have to supplement with higher doses of folic acid (5mg) each day until they're twelve weeks pregnant if they have a higher percentage of having a pregnancy affected by neural tube defects.
