What is the path of digestion?
The digestive system begins at the mouth and ends at the bottom. Everything that occurs in-between is the digestive process and as with any process in the Body, things may go wrong.
What can cause bad digestion?
We all commonly hear that phrase “you are what you eat” and that’s because diet, along with lifestyle has been largely associated with health throughout every stage of life from developing babies to elderly. A poor diet can result in prolonged tiredness, difficulty in recovering from exercise, an increase in Stress and a decline in Sleep quality. And when things go wrong in the digestive system it can affect the whole body from the obvious symptoms like Heartburn & Indigestion, Constipation or diarrhoea to less expected things such as mental health issues and immunity.
Ultimately a healthy diet contributes to a healthy fulfilling life.
Does digestion slow down with age?
As we age, our ability to digest food diminishes because changes in the gut microflora of the elderly tend to affect digestion and the absorption of essential nutrients. And with a reduced immune system too, there may be bacterial overgrowth in the gut that could reduce the beneficial gut flora, leading to diarrhoea or constipation.
There is strong evidence that supporting an elderly persons’ nutritional status with good nutrition and nutritional Supplements can decrease complications, hospitalisation and even extend longevity.
