It is made from dried, roasted carob tree pods and is often used as a natural sweetener in home-baked goods. Also known as carob flour, carob powder has a distinctively sweet taste and makes for an ideal alternative to Cocoa powder
It is often used by bakers as a Chocolate substitute, however it can also be used as a flavouring agent in desserts and drinks too.
Carob powder is free from stimulants, such as caffeine and theobromine, and is lower in fat than cocoa powder. It contains more dietary fibre too, and has a higher carbohydrate concentration.
It is naturally sweeter than chocolate but not as bitter. Carob also has a slightly roasted taste to it, compared to chocolate.
While there was no substantial scientific evidence to support the purported health benefits of carob at the time of writing, it was, and still remains, a popular choice for those with high Cholesterol, diabetes and those involved in elite, athletic performance.
