What is Manuka Honey?
Manuka Honey is a monofloral honey, sourced from the nectar of the New Zealand Manuka Tree. It contains naturally occurring active ingredients (Methylglyoxal & Hydrogen Peroxide) that distinguishes it from regular Honey, and is categorised by a UMF (Unique Manuka Factor). The higher the UMF, the more potent these natural properties are.
Manuka Honey has long had a reputation as a 'healing honey' and is commonly sold as an alternative medicine.
What are the benefits of Manuka Honey?
Compared to a standard dressing, there is presently insufficient evidence to conclude that Manuka Honey really does help to heal skin wounds, however in New Zealand it has been long been used to do just this. Manuka Honey's high sugar content combined with Methylglyoxal, its antibacterial active ingredient, is thought to create a waterless environment that harmful bacteria is unable to survive in.
Studies are ongoing in to the effectiveness of Manuka Honey, and should you have a wound or bacterial infection then it is always recommended to seek the consultation of a medical practitioner before using any types of alternative treatments.
