Turmeric is herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family and grows wild in Asia. It has been used widely in India as a dye (colouring agent), in cooking and is a major part of Ayurvedic medicine. Clinical trials have shown that Turmeric has some role in treatment of a number of conditions including some cancers, diabetes and pancreatitis. The most recent publication on the positive effects of Turmeric suggest that it may help to reduce pain in those suffereing with osteoarthritis, and furthermore suggests it to be as effective as many pharmaceutical drugs but without the undesirable side effects. Turmeric is available as powder or in concentrated capsule form.
