Chocolate has been tempting our tastebuds for thousands of years, and can be traced back to the Ancient Aztec and Mayan civilisations. This Sweet food is usually presented in the form of a solid block or paste and is made from ground, roasted Cacao Beans, Cocoa Butter and sweeteners such as powdered Sugar. Until the early Victorian times, Chocolate was exclusively for drinking and then a method for making solid 'eating' chocolate was formulated.
Chocolate comes from the Nahuatl word 'Xocolatl' for bitter water, alluding to its original incarnation as a hot, spiced Mayan beverage. The bitterness and unique taste of good quality Chocolate can be attributed to the 70% cocoa solids that have an Antioxidant effect, and in small quantities are thought to decrease the risk of a stroke and improve the overall health of your heart. Other studies show that Chocolate can reduce secretion of hormones causing Stress, so even though it may not be the healthiest thing for your waistline there are some good reasons for treating yourself once in a while!
