What is the difference between Probiotics and Prebiotics?
Probiotics are related to, but not the same as, prebiotics. Prebiotics are fibres which stimulate the growth of probiotics, and the key differentiating factor is the length of the chemical chain – short chain; medium chain or long chain - which determines where in the gastrointestinal tract the prebiotic has its effect. Probiotics support immunity and digestive health by respecitvely stimulating the body's natural defences and producing specific enzymes needed in the Digestion of Food, to help break down food substances. Probiotics also improve the absorption of Vitamins & Minerals into the bloodstream, and even produce B complex vitamins & vitamin K.
What are live cultures?
Live, or active cultures, refer to the microorganisms found in foods such as yoghurt, which may be beneficial for human health. The term 'live cultures' is increasingly used instead of the term 'probiotics' and a common example is the species acidophilus.
