More Information

What are lotus seeds?

Lotus seeds come from the lotus flower, India’s national flower. They are sourced from the fruit of the plant, which is found growing naturally in Indian ponds and rivers - nature’s answer to our snacking needs!

Can you eat lotus seeds?

Yes! Lotus seeds can be consumed fresh or in dried form. They’ve been a long standing staple in Indian street Food, where they’re roasted in ghee and sprinkled with salt. In fact they’re thought to be one of the oldest aquatic crops in eastern India, and have become something of a symbolic snack within their culture - known not only as a delicious snack but also a prominent ingredient in Ayurveda.

Can diabetics eat lotus seeds?

Being a low glycaemic (GI) food, the glycaemic index of lotus seeds is significantly lower than foods like Bread, Rice, Pulses & Grains. However diabetics or those individuals suffering from obesity, should carefully consider the additional ingredients of each Native Snack, such as the salt or seasoning, before choosing to consume them.
